Clouds

A beautiful haiku by Basho came to mind as I drove towards the clouds.

Clouds come from time to time –

and bring to men a chance to rest

from looking at the moon.

Basho

The clouds were amazing the evening I took these pictures. All six were taken heading away from the sun. The bottom three were taken about five minutes after the top three and a rosy glow seems to fill the picture. Because the clouds were in the east, I did not think the sun would impact the pictures as it seems to. Perhaps it was the setting of the sun. Being neither a scientist or a professional photographer I’m unsure. To me, the sky in the top pictures looks more like twilight and the bottom three look more like early morning.

The clouds were incredibly large in the evening and I remember thinking I’d never seen such cottony dimensional clouds. They seemed like mountains in the distance. Basho wrote that clouds come to bring a chance to rest from moonlight. On this evening, the clouds could and did steal any spotlight the moon may have had. Towering over the landscape, peering through the evergreens, filling the skies and my spirit. My words and pictures seem inadequate when I think of the clouds.
